Update on Prof De Rooy

I thought I would write a quick update on why I am not in Berlin with the SPIG gang.

On Friday morning I was packed and ready to go, but I woke up with double vision.  After contacting my doctor, I ended up in the ER and eventually was admitted to the  hospital. After several tests, MRIs, CAT scans etc the doctors ruled out most of the scary stuff that could cause double vision.  They said that with the limited data they  had, they concluded  the the Binocular diplopia  (double vision) was caused by a post viral inflammation of the cranial nerves/muscles that control my left eye.  It may still develop into Guillain-Barre syndrome (Miller-Fisher Syndrome) and we need to watch for additional symptoms for the next 7-10 days. The doctor said that my vision should slowly improve over the next 3 months (!) and could take up to a year for it to fully resolve.

Alas, this is good news in many ways but it does mean that I will not be able to meet up with the SPIG students in Berlin.

The students are in good hands.  Prof Ron Plaisier has team-taught the SPIG with me for the past two summers.  We have a good support team in Berlin in the event that an emergency arises.   Prof Nielsen is also currently in Europe and is available if needed. I am also helping with some of the logistics.

I would like to thank everyone for the prayers and support for me.  Although I am not in Berlin like I had hoped, I do feel comfort that our LORD is in control.

Regards,

Prof De Rooy

  1. We are praying for you!! Thankful for the update. Your biggest job now is rest – we are sure the students will be fine. Thank you for your leadership, and we’re glad that you’re still watching over things from across the ocean.
