When someone asks me, “How was Germany?” I am going to have so much to say, I don’t even know where I’ll start. But I’ll still do my best to sum it up as quick as I can. Continue reading “Elevator Speech”

Reflections on Köln
Walking out of the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) of Köln, you are confronted by a tall, massive, almost menacing remnant of Gothic architecture. An epic feat of construction, the church stands at the city square, now serving as a massive tourist attraction more than a place of worship.
Reflections on Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp
When I think of Germany, I think of engineering, efficiency, soccer, beer, and sausage. But I also always think of World War II and the holocaust.
Several weeks ago, we took a day trip to the memorial site of the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. Despite this trip taking place several weeks ago, I still remember it very clearly because of how much an impact it had on me. Visiting the site where these events actually Continue reading “Reflections on Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp”
Initial Reflections on Germany

Some of my impressions from this last week of experiencing Berlin: Berlin is a beautiful city, mixed with fascinating history Continue reading “Initial Reflections on Germany”
First Thoughts
My name is Caleb Schmurr, and I am studying engineering at Calvin College. When I heard about the opportunity to study abroad in Germany I knew I wanted to go on the trip. I really wanted to study abroad at one point in my college experience, and this opportunity was perfect. I get the chance to stay in another country for 6 weeks while getting a course out of the way without falling behind. This summer program is an amazing opportunity to study abroad, and I wanted to take it.
While in Germany, I hope to learn a lot from the class we take and master the principles of Statics and Dynamics (and get a good grade). I believe that my excitement to learn is a positive trait that will contribute to the group, and encourage everyone to take advantage of the opportunity we have to see and experience something new. My prayer for this group is that we can learn a lot, grow as people, and enjoy the trip.
