Knight Vision is a group of four senior mechanical engineering students at Calvin College, working on a senior design project for the VanNoord Arena. This year-long project is aimed to redesign the online streaming sports experience for Calvin College fans. A significant portion of Calvin’s student athletes are from out of state, which means there are many friends and families that are relying on Calvin’s online streaming to watch games. This new online camera will be streaming basketball and volleyball games, with the potential to be used for graduation, convocation, and C club award ceremonies. Currently, Calvin’s streaming system is static and has potential to be improved.
The proposal is to redesign the streaming experience by offering a dynamic camera that will capture the action. The idea is to have a rail system with a sliding camera along one end of the arena. A student will be able to control the positioning of the camera using an Xbox controller. This camera will be able to move laterally up to 8mph along the railing with abilities to pivot and zoom. With these capabilities and a large rail length, Knight Vision will be able to capture any action in the VanNoord Arena and create a better online streaming experience.
