Reflection on Wittenberg

Martin Luther’s church in Wittenberg provided a different experience than the Cologne Cathedral.

While the Cologne Cathedral felt large, cold, and imposing, the Castle Church in Wittenberg felt homey and friendly.  Both church services had quite a lot of ceremony, but the feel of the congregation and service was quite different.

For example, we did not take Communion in the Cologne Cathedral because they preferred that we didn’t, but we were encouraged to come forward during Communion at Luther’s church.  There was even singing in the aisles and people smiling while taking Communion in Wittenberg, while in Cologne the Sacrament was kept much more solemn.
