Wittenberg

This picture was taken on a Sunday morning in Wittenberg, the town where one of the most famous reformers, Martin Luther, lived. But why are the streets and churches near empty on a Sunday?

dude, i dunno.

My best guess is that, a big part of Luther’s quarrel with the church of the time was related to indulgences and idolizing artifacts, so it would follow that Luther would not want a great many things to be praised including himself. Luther was not Jesus, or a Pope, he was not worshiped as divine, he was respected as a man. I think most of the vacancy in Whittenberg is due to reformed way of thinking that we are all equal and the idolizing of a single man (other than Jesus) is wrong.

Another theory to why there are so few people in Whittenberg comes from the decline in church attenders/member/Christians caused from the illegalization of religion in east Germany after World War 2. This makes sense on a local level as to why there are not many German tourists in Whittenberg, but it doesn’t explain why foreigners are also scarce. I think it is because of the nature of his legacy, but it could also just be the lack of attractions in the town other than Martin Luther. Whittenberg is a small town with not much to do, the whole town can be seen in an afternoon including the Luther museums.
