Epilogue

Six weeks went by fast–too fast, in my opinion. This summer was an absolute once in a lifetime experience. I’m so thankful for the relationships I built; the Engineering class I was able to take; and the deep, rich history that Germany offers. From the ongoing day-to-day silly games that we played while traveling and the quiet group reflections while visiting Holocaust Memorials; I don’t believe we could’ve had a better, more supportive group. Weekend group travel was a nice offset to homework and class throughout the week. I’m still amazed by the number of places we were able to experience throughout Germany. We saw a well-rounded view of city culture, but also some of the quieter and less-touristy towns.

I’ve already said this, but I will repeat it again: the group and professors were what made the trip so great. I had the opportunity to cultivate past relationships, and build new ones. The sense of community we had was unlike any I’ve ever experienced. There were several times where I felt safer in an unknown city because we kept an eye out for each other. Several of us have already expressed an interest in a SPIG 2017 reunion at some point!

Out of all of the places I visited in Germany, I think my two favorites were Heidelberg and Jasmund National Park in the North. Heidelberg had much flavor and variety. From the “Miracle Mile” of expensive shopping during the day to exploring the grounds of Heidelberg Castle at night, there was much to be seen–and I can’t wait to go back! Jasmund National Park was gorgeous with its towering chalk cliffs, peaceful forests, and mottled black and white stones along the Baltic Sea. A seven hour hiking day was long but absolutely worth it!

Gelato twice in one day was not uncommon. Neither was running in the rain back to our hostel just after getting off our bus. We’re still baffled how Andrew and Adam got lost and made it all the way to Checkpoint Charlie (twice!). Professor De Rooy really perfected his photobombing skills by the end of his time there. After a large conventional German meal, we collectively waddled back to our hotel/hostel.

I’ll never forget our time here. Many thanks to those who generously made this trip possible for me! Until next time, Germany.
