Reflections (A Sobering Visit)

The Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp visit is an experience that I will never forget. The day started with our entrance to the vast camp. The camp spanned for acres and acres, and only the outline of the barracks were there to show the huge magnitude of people who once “lived” there.

Our group walked through some of the still standing barracks that had description of what went on in each room. It is horrifying that people once had to live in those conditions. We saw the gas chambers, and shooting trench, and is unbelievable that those things happened in the places we saw. We also saw the dissection room, where the nazi doctors performed experiments on the Jews. We learned about the different operations that were performed in the concentration camp. Mustard gas and cocaine were used on the jews through experimentation to further improve their means of usage. We saw a few torture methods used on the jews, as well as the places they were carried out. The whole time there was depressing, and made me think about how fortunate I am to not have to witness the horror firsthand. I am thankful to see the camp, but I won’t be back. On the way out of the door, we were swept away with a brisk, cold air that sent chills up my spine.
