The Stories of Individual People

Visiting the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp was a crazy experience. I have always felt so removed from the events that occurred during the holocaust so it is hard to actually understand the day to day struggles that people went through. I think something that the museum designers did really well was tell the story of so many individual people. It is easy to lose sights of the horrors that people went through when you are looking at them as a group of people that you cannot relate with at all. But hearing someone’s stories and learning about their struggles creates a connection which makes the atrocities so much harder to think about. I also did not realize that the Soviets took over Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp after they had liberated the NAZI prisoners. They then used it as a military war prison. I find it incredibly hard to believe that they would liberate so many people that were being abused and near to death and then feel that it would be okay to put their own prisoners in the camps. The camp itself was in use for an incredibly long time and this shocked me.
